Tesla's compact crossover and the first electric vehicle to finish a year as the world's best-selling car.

The story of the Model Y

Production of the Model Y began at Fremont in January 2020, and under its familiar Tesla shape sat a piece of plumbing that would spread across the lineup. It was the first Tesla to heat its cabin with a heat pump instead of electric resistance, managed by a motorized coolant valve Tesla called the Octovalve. The system ties heating and cooling for the cabin, battery, and drive units into one loop, and analysis at the time credited it with roughly a 10 percent gain in efficiency, enough to give the heavier, taller crossover about the same range as the Model 3.

Customer deliveries began on March 13, 2020. Underneath, the rear of the body was a single aluminum casting from Tesla's Giga Press that replaced 70 separate parts. In December 2020 the first cars with an optional third row reached buyers, a $3,000 package that added two small fold-flat seats in the cargo area. In January 2021 a Standard Range rear-drive version joined the lineup at $41,990 with a 244-mile EPA rating, though it left the online configurator within weeks.

Production spread fast. Shanghai built the Model Y for China and export markets, Gigafactory Berlin delivered its first 30 German-built cars on March 22, 2022, and Gigafactory Texas followed with its Cyber Rodeo opening on April 7. Volume did the rest. In calendar 2023 the Model Y recorded about 1.23 million sales, according to JATO Dynamics, ahead of the Toyota RAV4 at 1.07 million and the Toyota Corolla at 1.01 million. It was the first time an electric vehicle had topped the global sales chart.

The redesign known as Juniper was unveiled in China on January 10, 2025. It brought a new nose with a thin light bar that echoed the Cybertruck and the Cybercab, a light bar at the rear, a 15.4-inch center screen, an 8-inch rear screen, ventilated front seats, and wraparound ambient lighting. Unlike the updated Model 3, it kept a turn signal stalk. Chinese prices started at 263,500 yuan, while the US Launch Series sold for $59,990. Deliveries began in China on February 26 and in the United States in early March.

Tesla then widened the family. On August 19, 2025, it launched the six-seat Model Y L in China, 4,976 mm long on a 3,040 mm wheelbase, from 339,000 yuan. A new Model Y Performance appeared in Europe on August 29 and reached US buyers on September 30, 2025, with a 3.3-second 0-60 mph claim, a 155 mph top speed, 21-inch wheels, and a carbon fiber spoiler. A week later, on October 7, the Model Y Standard arrived at $39,990 with 321 miles of range. To hit that price Tesla dropped the light bars, the rear screen, the subwoofer, and ambient lighting, and covered the glass roof with a fabric headliner.

The pendulum swung back in 2026. In January Tesla reintroduced a US third-row option, now $2,500 and limited to the Premium Long Range AWD, and gave Premium cars a black headliner and a 16-inch screen. In July 2026 the Model Y L reached the United States as a $61,990 Premium AWD Launch Series rated at 325 miles and 4.4 seconds to 60 mph, built at Giga Texas.

Generations

2020–2025 Original

The launch generation, the first Tesla with a heat pump, which added an optional third row and became the world's best-selling vehicle in 2023.

The Model Y went into production at Fremont in January 2020 with something no Tesla had used before: a heat pump. Instead of warming the cabin with electric resistance, the system moves heat around the car through a motorized valve Tesla called the Octovalve, two stacked four-way valves turned by a stepper motor, which ties the cabin, battery pack, and drive units into one thermal loop. Analysis published that summer credited it with roughly a 10 percent efficiency gain, and the Model 3 adopted a heat pump for its 2021 model year.

Deliveries started on March 13, 2020. The rear underbody was one Giga Press casting in place of 70 parts, a method Tesla later extended to the front of the car. Late that year Tesla began building the seven-seat option, and the first deliveries came in early December 2020. The $3,000 package added two small third-row seats that fold flat into the cargo floor. In January 2021 Tesla added a Standard Range rear-drive model at $41,990, rated at 244 miles, then pulled it from the configurator the next month. The third-row price later rose to $4,000 before dropping back to $3,000 in April 2023.

Efficiency kept creeping up while production spread to Shanghai, Berlin, and Austin. From October 2022, new Model Ys for North America and Europe lost their ultrasonic parking sensors in favor of cameras. The 2023 Long Range AWD was rated at 330 miles, and that year the Model Y became the first electric vehicle to top the global sales chart. JATO Dynamics counted about 1.23 million sales in calendar 2023, ahead of the Toyota RAV4 at 1.07 million and the Toyota Corolla at 1.01 million.

The last cars of this generation were listed for the 2025 model year: a Long Range RWD at 337 miles, a Long Range AWD 26 miles behind it at 311, and a Performance at 277 miles, down from the 303 miles the Performance carried between 2021 and 2023. The redesigned car that replaced it was unveiled in January 2025.

2025–present Juniper

The January 2025 redesign with a light-bar nose and larger screens, followed by the six-seat Model Y L, a new Performance, a lower-priced Standard, and a returning third row.

The redesigned Model Y, developed as Project Juniper, was unveiled on January 10, 2025, in China and the other markets Shanghai supplies. Its new nose carries a thin light bar in the style of the Cybertruck and Cybercab, with the headlights split below it, and a light bar runs across the tail. Inside, the center screen grew to 15.4 inches, rear passengers got an 8-inch screen, and the front seats gained ventilation, with ambient lighting wrapping around the cabin. Unlike the Highland Model 3, the Model Y kept a turn signal stalk. In China it started at 263,500 yuan; the US Launch Series cost $59,990. Shanghai started volume production early, so Chinese deliveries began on February 26 instead of March, and US deliveries began in early March.

The Launch Series and the Long Range AWD are both rated at 327 miles, and the Launch Series has a 125 mph top speed and a 4.1-second 0-60 mph time. The 2026 Premium Long Range RWD stretches range to 357 miles on 19-inch wheels, with a 5.4-second 0-60 mph time. The new Performance went on sale in Europe on August 29, 2025, and in the US on September 30 at $57,490. It reaches 60 mph in 3.3 seconds and tops out at 155 mph, rides on adaptive suspension and staggered 21-inch wheels, and charges at up to 250 kW.

The Model Y L, launched in China on August 19, 2025, is 4,976 mm long on a 3,040 mm wheelbase and seats six, with two captain's chairs in the second row. It uses an 82 kWh battery and was rated at 751 km on China's CLTC cycle. It reached the US on July 2, 2026, as a $61,990 Premium AWD Launch Series rated at 325 miles, built at Giga Texas.

On October 7, 2025, the Model Y Standard arrived at $39,990 with 321 miles of range and a 6.8-second 0-60 mph time. It has no light bars, no rear screen, no ambient lighting, seven speakers without a subwoofer, textile seat inserts, heated but not ventilated front seats, and manually folding mirrors. It still has a glass roof, covered inside by a fabric headliner. Edmunds drove one 337 miles on a charge. In January 2026 Tesla brought back a $2,500 third row for the Premium Long Range AWD, and owners of new Fremont-built cars began finding a computer labeled AI4.5, which Tesla called a labeling mistake.

    From October 2022 Tesla built Model Ys for North America, Europe, Taiwan, and the Middle East without the 12 ultrasonic parking sensors, relying on cameras (Tesla Vision).
